An amendment has been presented to Parliament to give the control of Local Government Authority (LGA)’s board to the president.
If the amendment is passed as proposed on behalf of the government by Ungoofaaru MP Jaufar Dawood, the LGA board will not feature any councillors but only members appointed by the president.
While nine members are currently on the board, the amendment reduces the number to five.
MP Jaufar claimed that the amendment will enable to strengthen the work of the board and ease its running.
The current board of LGA consists of a minister appointed by the president, a Male City councillor, 4 atoll councillors, a member of a non-governmental organisation, a city councillor and a member appointed from the public.
