Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s chairperson Hassan Latheef proclaimed on Tuesday that the government refers to corruption as “development” and that the people has refused to recognise it.

Addressing an opposition rally, Hassan also remarked that development is not defined in concrete, referring to the numerous infrastructural projects launched by the current administration, but in the ideology of the people. Countering the president’s claim that development will be brought despite the support of local councils, he declared that all that the government has brought in the name of development is corruption.

He added that the state spending more than required for the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge being constructed between capital Male and airport island Hulhule, and the new 25 storey building of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is also corruption and treachery.

Noting that the people have said “no” to these projects, Hassan said that the main reason for the ruling coalition’s failure in the recently held Local Council Election is that the president expressed his anger and animosity in the field of politics. He thus called on the government to free all political prisoners.
