Former president and incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s half-brother Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has been transferred to Maafushi Prison Thursday night.

Gayyoom was kept at the Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre prior to the transfer.

Gayyoom’s lawyer and former deputy Prosecutor General Hussein Shameem said that he was informed of the transfer – through the reason was not specified.

The former strongman is being charged with bribing lawmakers, exerting undue influence on the judiciary and bribing judges, and conspiring to illegally stage a coup, as well as inciting violence and calling the security forces to revolt against the government.

Gayyoom has denied all the charges that are being levied against him by the state.

He was arrested from his home in the capital Male early Tuesday night, just shortly after the president had declared a state of emergency, in effect for 15-days. His son-in-law Mohamed Nadheem was also arrested the same night.

Since then, his son Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon has also been taken back to prison. He was released Tuesday morning after the Criminal Court ordered his immediate release, following the Supreme Court’s  ruling that ordered the release of all political prisoners.

MP Faris was taken back after the top court overturned its ruling and revoked the order to release the nine high-profile politicians from jail.

After the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling last Thursday, former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb was reportedly transferred to Maafushi Prison from Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre.
