The Prosecutor General’s Office has forwarded charges to the Criminal Court against a former lecturer at the Maldives National University (MNU) for sexually harassing a female student.

The sexual assault case, involving a minor, surfaced last May. MNU had dismissed the permanent lecturer from his post after launching a disciplinary probe against him.

Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham stated Tuesday that the man is charged with sexually assaulting a minor while in a position of authority and trust.

If proven guilty, he faces a sentence of 15 – 18 years in jail.

The case was investigated by both Police and the Ministry of Gender and Family.
