Fareesha Ibrahim, the younger sister of former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim, passed away in Singapore late Wednesday.
Fareesha passed away around 8:30 p.m. local time while receiving treatment for cancer at a hospital in Singapore. She had been treated for cancer in Bangalore, India for around two months before being transferred to Singapore when her condition worsened.
Her sister Nasreena Ibrahim, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and two of their children, Dhunya and Yumna Maumoon are currently in Singapore. The couple’s youngest son Ghassan had returned to the Maldives on Wednesday while their older son, Faris Maumoon, had been unable to visit his aunt in Singapore due to the travel ban imposed on him over an ongoing police investigation against Faris.
Faris had requested the authorities multiple times to grant him permission to visit Fareesha in Singapore for a week, which Police had denied. The decision had sparked harsh criticism from the public towards the government amidst which the home ministry released a statement, explaining that Faris’ travel ban cannot be lifted as there is a possibility that he may go on the run from investigation should he be allowed to travel abroad. Faris had denied any such intentions and again requested the authorities on Wednesday to grant him permission to visit his ailing aunt.
Fareesha Ibrahim, 65, was the wife Ibrahim Manik, who had long served as a minister during the regime of Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. She was also the younger sister of Ilyas Ibrahim and Abbas Ibrahim, who had served senior government positions.
