Foreign minister concludes visit to Romania

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid concluded Monday a four-day official visit to Romania to mark four decades since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries.

During the trip, Shahid met with his counterpart Teodor Meleșcanu to review ongoing cooperation.

“Consultations focused on avenues of cooperation in trade, tourism, education, food industry, as well as on opportunities for exchange of technical expertise in the areas of disaster risk management and climate change,” according to a joint press release.

“The two chief diplomats also exchanged views on the current state of regional affairs and reiterated their commitment to multilateralism, while agreeing to deepen cooperation in the international fora.”

The foreign ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding, “which will give impetus to the bilateral political-diplomatic dialogue by establishing a mechanism for regular consultations on bilateral and regional issues.”

Shahid also paid a courtesy call on Ana Birchall, vice prime minister for the implementation of Romania’s Strategic Partnerships, and held meetings with the leadership of the Ministry for Business Environment, Commerce and Entrepreneurship, the Ministry of Interior Affairs and the Director General of the Romanian Diplomatic Institute.

On Monday evening, Grand Mufti Iusuf Muurat, head of the Muslim community in Romania, hosted an iftar (breakfast meal) in honour of the foreign minister at the Hunchiar – Carol I Mosque in Bucharest.
