First lady tours islands for pres’ re-election campaign

The First Lady of the Maldives, Fathimath Ibrahim, has begun touring the islands for President Abdulla Yameen’s reelection campaign for this year’s presidential election.

She led the tour to the islands of Alif Alif atoll this week and visited some islands of Haa Dhaal Atoll on Wednesday, accompanied by a number of lawmakers of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Speaking on behalf of the president’s campaign office, the spokesperson of the President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz, said that the first lady would visit the islands of Khulhuduffushi, Nolhivaran and Nolhivaranfaru of Haa Dhaal atoll in this leg of the tour she began on Wednesday morning.

He also stated that Fathimath Ibrahim had a keen interest in the welfare of the people and this visit was aimed at meeting and inquiring about the lives of the residents.

Stressing that President Yameen would compete as PPM’s candidate, he added that the campaign started by the First Lady’s Office would see Yameen re-elected for a second term.

Despite many prominent figures of the ruling party proclaiming that Yameen would be the party’s candidate for the upcoming election, PPM’s council is yet to officially endorse it.
