First international Quran recitation competition to be held ahead of Ramadan

The Maldivian government has decided to host the first international Quran recitation competition in May.

During a press conference held by the Islamic Affairs Ministry on Sunday, the Islamic minister Dr. Ahmed Ziyad said “Noorul Mubeen” Quran competition will be held from May 13 till May 15. He added that the prices will be awarded on May 17.

It is estimated that in addition to Maldives, 11 other countries will take part in the competition. Every country will be bringing forth a single contestant to represent them.

The minister also said that an audition will be held on May 1 to decide on a contestant that will represent Maldives. That judges for the audition will huffaz from Maldives and abroad.

The initiative by President Abdulla Yameen is being organised by the Islamic Ministry, Centre for the Holy Quran and Public Service Media (PSM).

President of the Centre for the Holy Quran Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa said that, since local participants had done well in competitions held abroad, they are hopeful of the local contentment doing well in this competition too.

PSM’s deputy managing director Mohamed Ikram said that the state has offered the first prize winner a sum of USD 30,000 (MVR 462,000). The runner-up will be awarded a sum of USD 15,00 (MVR 21,300).

Ikram noted that all the participants will also be awarded a special price from the President.
