Statistics published by the Department of Judicial Administration’s (DJA) have shown that the most number of cases submitted to the court in 2017 relate to family matters.
The statistics show that over 20,600 were lodged last year. This is a three percent increase compared to the figures in 2016.
Although civil problems are usually most common, in 2017, 46 percent of the cases were related to family problems. Details of the type of cases logged were not divulged to the public.
Civil matters were the second most common type of case filed in 2017, with 28 percent, followed by criminal cases with 26 percent.
While more cases have been logged in 2016, only 18,300 cases have been closed. This is less than the record-breaking figure of over 20,000 cases closed in 2016.
