Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is to fly abroad on Saturday amidst high political tensions over the motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh submitted by the joint opposition.
Maumoon announced the decision in a letter he sent to the Anti-Corruption Commission of the Maldives (ACC).
The letter addressed to the president of ACC, Hassan Luthfee, states that Maumoon will be staying abroad regarding a family matter for a period of 10 days. He requested ACC to postpone taking his statement until his return.
ACC is currently investigating an issue of the former presidential palace of Theemuge which is related to former President Maumoon. He was denied presenting himself to ACC to give his statement the commission’s regulations mandate that ACC official go to the persons under investigation for their statements.
