Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom declared that he is not afraid of being arrested by his younger brother and incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s government and that he will be soon returning to the Maldives.

Former President Maumoon went abroad on March 8 with his wife Nasreena Ibrahim to visit the latter’s younger sister, Fareesha Ibrahim, who was receiving medical treatment in Singapore. After she passed away May 31, rumours began to circulate that Maumoon would not return for fear of being arrested.

Countering the comments, former President Maumoon responded that he only fears Allah and no one else.

Noting that the thought of fleeing had never crossed his mind, he stated that there would not be any reason for him to be arrested.
