Ex-CP Riyaz shares information on Dr. Afrasheem’s murder with DDCom

Former Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Riyaz has shared information regarding the brutal 2012 murder of a prominent politician and Islamic scholar Dr Afrasheem Ali with the Disappearances and Deaths Commission (DDCom).

Dr Afrasheem, who had been serving as the parliamentary representative for Ungoofaaru constituency, was found stabbed to death at the stairwell of his residence in the early hours of October 2, 2012.

Then-CP Riyaz, who currently serves as parliamentary representative for Thimarafushi constituency, tweeted on Tuesday that he had shared all the information he was privy to regarding the murder with the DDCom.

“I shared all the information I have on Dr Afrasheem’s murder with the Commission on Disappearances and Deaths today. And I answered all questions posed by the commissioners,” tweeted Riyaz.

Riyaz, following his resignation from the police, had promised to disclose all the information he had on the murder “on the most appropriate platform there is for it”.

And later, in an interview to Sun on its 50 Minute series in April, said that the DDCom had yet to question him regarding the murder.

He said that the murder case had been one which the police had utilized the most resources for, and that a fountain of information had been collected with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

DDCom’s questioning of Riyaz comes one month after its chair, Husnu Al-Suood promised to reveal details regarding the murder in a matter of weeks.

“Confident that @DdcomMdv will reveal the details of this horrific crime within weeks, including the details of the perpetrators and those who planned it,” tweeted Suood on October 2, on the 7th anniversary to the murder.

It has yet to reveal the details as promised.

The DDCom previously released CCTV footage of two persons of interest wanted in connection to its investigation into the murder.

Hussain Humam Ahmed is currently on death row for the murder. He lost his last bid to appeal the death penalty with the Supreme Court in 2016.
