EU warns against attempts to undermine transfer of power

The European Union will not hesitate to consider taking measures against anyone who undermines a peaceful transfer of power in the Maldives, warns a member of European Parliament, Tomáš Zdechovský.

In a tweet last Monday, Zdechovský expressed concern over the decision by sitting Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to file a petition with the Supreme Court to nullify the results of the recent presidential elections.

He wrote that the petition was an attempt by Yameen to use the Supreme Court to undermine the elections.

“EU would not hesitate to consider taking all appropriate measures against anyone who undermines a peaceful transfer of power #Maldives,” tweeted Zdechovský.

Yameen, who lost his bid for re-election in the defeat against President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) initially conceded defeat in a televised statement on September 24. But he later filed a petition to nullify the results of the elections alleging the vote was rigged.

The last hearing in the petition filed by Yameen began at Supreme Court at 10:30 this Tuesday morning.

The court is yet to announce its decision.
