A delegation of the European Union met with former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on Saturday to discuss the upcoming presidential election in the Maldives.
In a tweet following the sit-down, Maumoon thanked the EU Ambassador and the rest of the delegation, disclosing that the discussion had focused on “concerns over the current political situation & the crucial need for a free fair & transparent presidential election this year.”
The EU delegation further met with opposition parties, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhoory Party (JP), the home ministry and attorney general to discern the current political landscape.
A top delegation of the EU Parliamentary Group had also visited the Maldives last October in the wake of a resolution passed by the parliament to place certain sanctions on the archipelago. While the parliament had said that the Maldives was on a route that conflicted with the principle of democracy, the Maldivian government had responded that it did not believe the EU parliament would follow through with the sanctions.
