The Environmental Protection Agency on Sunday started publicly naming individuals who litter and dump garbage on the streets of the capital.
The agency has tweeted the name and permanent address of three individuals who have been fined for littering. The tweets included photos and the dumping location.
The EPA thanked the police for their “continued collaboration in enforcing the waste regulation.”
A nation-wide cleanup programme was launched last month as part of the new administration’s first 100-day agenda.
The EPA has been under fire recently over what environmental activists are calling #MvTreeGrab, the transfer of trees from local islands for the landscaping of new resorts, many of which are being built on reclaimed land.
And what has @EPAMaldives done about this kind of waste dumping by contractors and resorts who are discarding serious contaminants in our communities?
The single citizen is easy prey for punitive action by GoM.
The businesses remain untouchable, do they?https://t.co/cRZK5CThwR— Humay (@HumayAG) January 2, 2019
Islands are being looted one by one. @EPAMaldives can fine & shame individuals littering Male’. Why can’t they do the same for resort tycoons robbing our islands?
When can we amend the regulation to make #MVTreeGrab illegal? Why are authorities turning a blind eye to this? pic.twitter.com/fe6LH2raZz— Adam Abdulla (@edzyadam) January 6, 2019
I think we need to start naming and shaming the staff at @EPAMaldives who have neglected their duties & help mass ecocide by turning a blind eye. Often downplays environmental crimes & when questioned the staff accuse of being harrased & attacked. Shame on EPA Maldives. https://t.co/EVLTuYLIUj
