The Elections Commission (EC) has decided to have a by-election of Thaa atoll Madifushi island constituency after a complaint was filed and reviewed of a non-eligible voter who cast a vote in Madifushi’s ballot box in the Local Council Elections.

According to EC member Ahmed Akram, the ballot cast by the voter could have brought a change to the results as the top four candidates had received nearly equal number of total votes.

According to the temporary results published so far, the top two candidates of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abbas Mohamed and Ali Haseen received a total of 389 votes. The third candidate, of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), received a total of 388 votes while the fourth candidate, of PPM, received a total of 387 votes.

The by-election will be held among the top four candidates only.
