The Maldives’ electoral watchdog on Sunday opened re-registration for the upcoming Local Council Elections after its third delay.

In a notice, the Elections Commission (EC) announced that re-registration will be open from Sunday to March 2. The commission stated that only people that are registering for the first time or those that have changed the location of voting are to register in this round.

The Local Council Elections were originally scheduled to be held January 14, but were delayed on a Civil Court order after the president’s faction of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) sought to postpone the elections as internal political disputes in the party had hindered their preparations.

The elections were postponed to April 8, but were delayed again as the Ministry of Education had difficulties in releasing schools to set up ballot boxes during that period.

Currently, the elections are scheduled for April 15.
