Elections Commission has announced it has requested legal advice regarding the exact date of the end of the current presidential term.
Speaking at a press conference held by EC this Wednesday, President of EC, Ahmed Shareef announced the existence of a difference in opinion regarding the exact date of the end of the current presidential term.
Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom assumed office on November 17, 2013.
Shareef said the difference in opinion is whether the current presidential term should be counted starting from November 11, 2013, or November 17, 2013.
“We have set the date by calculating that the legal 120 days will end on November 11. We have requested legal assistance over this difference in opinion,” said Shareef.
Shareef said the date of the end of a presidential term is not decided by the EC.
He said the commission’s decision regarding the issue will be announced as soon as it obtains legal advice.
