The Elections Commission revealed Thursday evening that the commission has received applications to register two new political parties in the Maldives.
The electoral watchdog stated that it would only reveal further information regarding the two possible political parties on Sunday.
“In the last couple of days, we’ve received two applications to create new political parties. But we can only disclose the information regarding these new parties after Sunday, when the deadline for applications close,” Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef said, speaking to the press.
Shareef, however, revealed that one application had to be rejected, as the interested individuals had not provided all the necessary documents along with the forms.
There are six political parties currently registered in the Maldives. They are the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and its coalition partner Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhoory Party, religiously conservative Adhaalath Party and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).
