The health ministry’s State Minister Dunya Maumoon has shared her concerns regarding the detention of her father, former president of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and her brother, Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon, with the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
Gayoom was taken into custody for bribery and allegedly conspiring to bring down the elected government. His arrest came on February 5 after a state of emergency was declared in the country.
On Sunday, Dunya posted on Twitter a photograph of her meeting with the president of HRCM, Aminath Enas, stating that she had shared her concerns with the commission about the detention and welfare of her father Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the two Supreme Court justices Abdulla Saeed and Ali Hameed, her brother Faris, other MPs and all arrested during the state of emergency. She also called on authorities to fully respect the rights of all detainees.
Following her father’s arrest, Dunya had faced heavy criticism and is currently on leave. She has not attended office since her father’s arrest on February 5. Dunya has since countered the criticism directed at her by stating that she would not hesitate to resign from her government post. Dunya’s sibling, Yumna, had previously met with the HRCM regarding the arrest of their brother Faris Maumoon.
Dunya served as the Foreign Minister in President Abdulla Yameen’s cabinet until July 5, 2016 when she had resigned from her post after disagreements with the government. She was later appointed as a state minister in the Ministry of Health in January 2017.
