Police on Sunday responded to concerns raised over why Mohamed Mafaaz, a convicted man who was arrested last Thursday under homicide suspicions, was free at the time of his arrest. They declared that Mafaaz had been released after he completed his previous jail sentence.

Mafaaz was arrested during a house raid last Thursday night in connection to the murder of Nadeem Abdul Raheem, 24, of Haa Alif atoll Thakandhoo island late last month. Police explained that Mafaaz, who had been sentenced to a year in jail by the High Court for violating a MoniCon order in 2016, had finished his sentence and was released last April.

He was arrested in March 2016 for violating the MoniCon order and charged at the High Court later in July. However, the court executed his one-year jail sentence from the day of his arrest.

Police released the information on Mafaaz after the public raised concerns as to why a convict listed among Dangerous Criminals by Police was free at the time he was arrested over Nadeem’s murder.
