The deterioration of democracy in the Maldives will not fare well for the nation’s long-term economic development, stated Germany on Friday.

In a statement released by the German Embassy in neighbouring Sri Lanka, Germany raised concerns over the current situation in the Maldives, saying that the state of democracy has exacerbated in the island nation.

Declaring that the voting procedures in the motion of no confidence recently taken against parliamentary speaker Abdulla Maseeh were in clear violation of parliament policies and regulations, the statement read that the aggravation against political rivals and opposition are a breach of democracy. The embassy added that the current state of affairs will not fare well for the economic development of the Maldives in the long run.

Germany called on the government of the Maldives to stop its cruelty against opposition lawmakers, civil institutions and the media.
