COVID-19: Maldives records 154 recoveries

National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) on Monday, announced that a total of 154 individuals recovered from COVID-19.

Speaking at the nightly press conference held at NEOC, President’s Office’s Communications Undersectary Mabrouq Abdul Azeez noted that 27 new recoveries were recorded since Saturday.

Shedding light on the first COVID-19 death in the country, Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s Medical Officer Dr Nazla Rafeeq, stated that through the investigative report compiled by the Ministry of Health’s Quality Improvement Division, delays were identified in acquiring samples from the patient. Based on the findings, Dr Nazla said that procedures had been strengthened in order to avoid a repeat scenario.

As per the amended procedures, samples of elderly people, regardless of being symptomatic or asymptomatic, will be prioritized. Moreover, their transfer to government facilities will also be given priority.

Further, Dr Nazla revealed that delays in testing at the Herathera and Furavaru Quarantine Facilities caused individuals from being released since completing their quarantine period. However, she noted that testing was completed for Herethera, and that authorities are now working to release people from the facility. Meanwhile, sample collection from Furavaru facility was completed on Monday.

In order to further curb the spread of COVID-19 in Manadhoo, Noonu Atoll, authorities will retain individuals in a 14-day quarantine period, even after testing negative for the virus as a precautionary measure.

With this development, Maldives currently records 1,395 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,218 active cases. The country has reported four fatalities and a total of 157 recoveries till date.

Maldives’ capital Malé, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 since confirming its first local transmission of the virus on April 15.

WHO has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 5.5 million people and claimed over 348,242 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, 2.3 million people have recovered.
