Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Thursday, stated that the daily average of infections could rise exponentially for the month of August.

During a press conference held at the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC), Dr Sheena Moosa, referring to HPA’s projections, stated that the Maldives could potentially record an upwards of 170 new infections on a daily basis beginning from August.

HPA projections for daily averages per month;

July: 71 cases

August: 170 cases

September: 105 cases

October: 68 cases

November: 29 cases

December: 18 cases

Dr Sheena further estimated that a total of 2,373 individuals could be confirmed positive during the month, noting that 16 individuals might require intensive care in a medical facility.

The figures for September, October, November and December stand at 1,454, 945, 409 and 254 cases respectively.

After recording low numbers for several weeks in May and early June, the number of cases began to increase again after the state initiated efforts to steer the country towards a ‘new normal’ with the phased easing of lockdown restrictions across the Greater Male’ Region on July.

In addition to the Greater Male’ region, active virus cases are currently present in Kelaa of Haa Alif Atoll, Soneva Jani resort of Noonu Atoll, Inguraidhoo of Raa Atoll, Eydhafushi, Kamadhoo and Seaside Finolhu resort of Baa Atoll, Kurendhoo of Lhaviyani Atoll, and Maafushi of Kaafu Atoll.

The Maldives now records total 3,719 confirmed and 1,120 positive cases, along with 2,568 recoveries and 16 deaths.

On March 12, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 17.5 million people and claimed over 678,354 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 10.9 million people have recovered.
