The Criminal Court on Sunday ordered the release of Jumhoory Party member, Ahmed Shafiu, who was arrested over allegedly attempting to bribe lawmakers.

Police arrested Ahmed Shafiu last week Monday night after an opposition rally held at Jumhoory Party’s main hub. He was accused of bribing lawmakers to gain support for the joint opposition’s resolution to seek a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

The court ordered his release as Police were not able to present additional evidence against him, according to Shafiu’s lawyer Ali Zahir.
