The Criminal Court on Tuesday ordered to place Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Musthafa, who is accused of spreading talks that could incite a coup, under a three-month travel ban.

The lawmaker tweeted a photograph of the court order late Tuesday but stated that the warrant was handed to him by the police instead of a court representative.

The order warranted by Judge Ibrahim Ali of the Criminal Court states that MP Musthafa’s talks during his appearance on pro-opposition television channel Raajje TV on July 28 could incite the people to commit unlawful acts and attempt to topple the current government and president.

The evidence backing the court order are video footage and the script of MP Musthafa’s appearance on Raajje TV.

The warrant orders Maldives Immigration to ban the lawmaker from travelling out of the Maldives between August 8 – November 8.

The order cites that MP Musthafa may attempt to flee the country as the reason behind the ban.
