The Criminal Court on Wednesday ordered to remand former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s lawmaker son, Faris Maumoon, until the end of his trial.
After a remand hearing of over four hours, Judge Ali Adam ruled to keep Dhiggaru MP Faris under Police custody with the reason that Faris might tamper with evidence if allowed to go free.
The Criminal Procedure Act accords judges the authority to order suspects to be remanded until the end of their trials should there be enough evidence to back the accusations.
MP Faris was arrested Tuesday under accusations of bribing lawmakers to gather support for the opposition lobbied motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh. Faris, who is one of the political leaders to spearhead the motion, has denied the accusations against him.
