The Criminal Court cancelled Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon’s hearing for his bribery case scheduled for Sunday.

The hearing, which was to be held Sunday morning, was abruptly cancelled without Faris being brought to court. So far, it is not clear why the hearing was cancelled.

Faris is among the nine political prisoners the Supreme Court had ordered to release in its landmark ruling late Thursday. Though the government claims that they are working on the release, none of the detained politicians has been released yet.

Faris’ team of lawyers have stated that they will sue each individual who stands in the way of his release, declaring that continuing to detain Faris is equivalent to holding him hostage under the current circumstances.

In a news conference held late Saturday, Maumoon Hameed of Faris’ legal team said that there was no reason why Faris should be kept in detention. He called it an act of kidnapping, adding that since the order came from the top court, there should not be any delays in enforcing the ruling.

Faris was released after being detained for over six months earlier this month, only to be rearrested less than two days later for allegedly planning a coup against the government with some parliamentarians in addition to more bribery charges against him.
