The Criminal Court on Monday added 15 days to the remand of Male City Councillor Zaidul Ameen, who was arrested on suspicion of blackmailing a judge.
This is his sixth remand after Ameen was first arrested on January 12. He was detained in Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre before he was shifted to house arrest towards the end of the January. He was again changed to Dhoonidhoo around a month later.
A member of Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of the divided ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Ameen had released a statement after he was shifted from house arrest to police custody again, claiming that the allegations against him are baseless and that a high ranking Police officer had asked him to withdraw his support for Maumoon and provide a statement against the former president.
Ameen also mentioned that he was interrogated regarding a hard disk that was reported missing from the former activity hub of PPM. This disk was lost when all the assets and equipment were shifted from the former PPM office to Dharubaaruge Convention Centre after the judiciary handed over control of PPM from its leader Maumoon to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
