Ministry of Tourism has been conducting marketing and destination promotional activities without affiliation of MMPRC, the government body mandated with the promotion of Maldives as a tourist destination.
Current activities run by MOT includes the inspection and quality checking of resort properties, liveaboards, and guesthouses across the Maldives.
According to Minister Waheed, the inspections will ensure that all members of the industry receive their basic human rights and that operations in the industry are carried out safely.
Inspections are expected to conclude by September 2019
Reports are circulating that the Ministry has been unfair on its inspection with some properties. It further highlights that the Ministry has given the green light for properties that have failed the quality checking test.
In early March 2015, Government issued a ban on foreigners from providing photography-related services in order to boost youth employment. Despite the restrictions, a lot of properties have foreigners employed in this field and proper measurements haven’t been taken by the Government on this issue.
MOT has also recently conducted discussions with Filmfare Awards organizers to host the upcoming edition in the Maldives.
The purpose of the Ministry of Tourism is to develop tourism at a national level while carrying out long-term planning and development that involves the establishment of regulatory functions to ensure a sustainable tourism industry for the Maldives.
The Maldives is highly in need of a policy that regulates guesthouses where the properties have to be registered under MIRA, regulates food security, provide better facilities for airports and new convention facilities.
The destination marketing organization for the Maldives, MMPRC has successfully conducted promotional activities within the Indian Ocean and abroad after the appointment of Mr Thoyyib Mohamed who was a state minister in Nasheed’s Government.
Marketing activities showcased by include roadshows in South Africa, India, and Malaysia. MMPRC has also taken part in multiple international fairs such as ITB Berlin, EMITT, FITUR, and OTM. The organization has also been hosting Media team from worldwide to promote Maldives as part of a series of FAM Trips to increase exposure to the Maldives.
