President Abdulla Yameen declared Tuesday that the constitutional framework of the Maldives is headed towards a “deadlock” which would put the president in front of the people “with one arm tied behind his back”.
Addressing the nation on the occasion of the 52nd Independence Day, President Yameen said that the system allows enemies to obstruct the work of government as well as halt the administration.
Noting that citizens chose a presidential system for the Maldives in 2007, President Yameen stated that the main principle of this system is to elect a leader with a certain manifesto for a specific period of time, allowing the leader to govern for that duration.
