Chinese ambassador for the Maldives Zhang Lizhong said Tuesday that he had not taken part in an opposition rally organized by the leading opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
The ambassador was spotted amongst a rally held late Monday by MDP. Several people claimed he participated in the rally and circulated pictures taken of Zhang with participants on social media.
However, Zhang has denied these claims, stating that he was simply a bystander and that he was not there on any official authority. Zhang told Mihaauu that he was simply passing by on his way home from the Chinese embassy, which was near the MDP gathering.
He stated that the Maldives and China share a close relationship and that the Chinese government is always ready to help the island nation. He added that, although China wants peace within the Maldives, as discussed before they will not interfere with the Maldives’ civil affairs.
He added that they are keeping a close eye on the situation of the Maldives.
