State Electric Company (STELCO) handed over the project to lay the high voltage power cable between capital Male and its reclaimed suburb Hulhumale to Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) of China for USD 38.6 million (MVR 567.4).

In a ceremony held in STELCO, the company’s CEO Ahmed Zuhoor and DEC’s manager director Shugang Wen signed the contract on behalf of their companies.

While speaking at the ceremony, Zuhoor said that a lot of work was done by the finance ministry and energy ministry within the last two years for this project. After the initial attempt fell through, they were trying to kick start the project again after assigning it to DEC.

The handover of the project came to a stop after an issue of corruption was raised by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). However, ACC had later given permission to go ahead with the project. Zuhoor addressed this issue in his speech and said that the project was handed over to DEC after consulting all the relevant independent authorities.

According to Zuhoor, this project will be completed along with the ongoing Fifth Power Project in Hulhumale. He noted that two 100 megawatt current cables will be laid during the project.

The project is to be carried out in three parts: the establishment of six 8.9 megawatt generators, a fuel farm, and a water desalination facility.
