President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Wednesday stated that the capital city Male is “not congested” and that more 25-storey buildings will rise in the near future.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of “Ravvehi Tharahgee”, a book on national development projects, the president expressed Male is not congested and that, by God’s grace, the city will soon see the rise of more 25-storey buildings.

Ravvehi Tharaqqee (Archipelago Development) provides information on the completed and ongoing projects being carried out during President Yameen’s administration, including information on projects undertaken from 2009 to 2013, aimed at researchers and university students.

The president noted that the government’s approval to construct high-rise buildings is expected to resolve land shortage issues in the capital city. Yameen added that the capital city belongs to the citizens of the nation and not only the inhabitants of the capital.

Moreover, he said that over 75 percent of the population is below 35 years of age, and stated that the government is responsible for accommodating an ideal environment for the mental and physical health of the youth.

The president maintained that the capital city is not congested, stating that other cities around the world face similar issues during the development phase.

With a population of over 130,000 and an area of 5.8 square kilometres, the Maldives is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Congestion has been a key issue in the capital city, the government continues to take steps to curb traffic congestion in the Maldives.
