Buried time capsule feared lost

The Majeedhiyya School in Malé is searching for a time capsule buried in its grounds 27 years ago.

It was buried in 1992 to celebrate the school’s 65th anniversary, an official told the Maldives Independent.

The education ministry has commissioned a contractor to dig up the school to uncover the capsule, the official confirmed.

The ministry started checking the grounds after the media reported the capsule had been thrown away by a company that carried out construction at the school.

Made from a water tank, the capsule contained letters, writings from former students, musical instruments and trophies won by Majeedhiyya, the first public school opened in the Maldives capital.

It was to be dug up on the 100th anniversary of the school in 2027.

The grounds the capsule was buried is now in Dharumavantha school, the school official noted.
