The Maldives Broadcasting Commission on Friday denied the claims that opposition-aligned Raajje TV is under its scrutiny for broadcasting an interview by former President Mohamed Nasheed where he had made statements about the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on February 1.
Raajje TV’s CEO Hussain Fiyaz had allegedly claimed that a member of the broadcasting commission filed a case against the TV channel for broadcasting the opposition leader’s interview, a source revealed Thurday, adding that Fiyaz had also asserted that the new investigation was being initiated to take more action against the channel.
Maldives Broadcasting Commission’s chief Mohamed Shaheeb had refuted the claims of the commission investigating Raajje TV for broadcasting Nasheed’s interview, stating that they were completely baseless.
“Some media were spreading fake news. We seriously condemn this, and we believe these are deliberate attempts to undermine and create public mistrust in the broadcasting commission’s work,” Shaheeb said.
The broadcasting commission’s chief also urged all media outlets to maintain professionalism when reporting and be more responsible in their work in delivering news to the public.
While the Maldives Broadcasting Commission denied the claims that it is investigating Raajje TV, the commission had previously heavily fined the TV channel three times over various misconducts in broadcasting.
