British Airways is expected to expand its fleet to the Maldives in the upcoming year.
In Excel London Convention Center where World Travel Market (WTM), the Ambassador of Maldives to the United Kingdom H.E. Mr Ahmed Shiaan noted that discussions are ongoing with airlines to increase the number of flights to the Maldives.
‘With the inauguration of the bridge, it has opened up various opportunities for the tourism industry. One arising issue we had before was the insurance rate of flights going high since crew has to commute to Male’ in ferry or speedboat. Now with the bridge, we won’t have to face this issue and we can conduct services with ease.’
He further noted that one airline is expected to start direct flights to the Maldives from the United Kingdom while another is expected to start from Europe in mid-2019.
Currently, British Airways operates to the Maldives only during winter. Preparations are taking place for the airline to expand its flight services due to the inauguration of the bridge.
Included in the Top Ten market to the Maldives, tourism statistics show more than 83,311 tourists from the United Kingdom has visited the Maldives. This is an increase of 10.3% from last year’ statistics.
