Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon’s lawyers have said that there was hope for an independent forensic investigation into his ongoing trial at the Criminal Court for allegedly offering bribes to a parliament member.

Faris’ legal team had requested to carry out an independent investigation of all the evidence submitted at the court.

During the hearing on Thursday, Faris’ lawyer Maumoon Hameed said that they were very hopeful about the independent forensic investigation. He added that the details of this would be shared with the court in the coming week. The lawyers had also informed the court that Faris was ready to bear the cost of the investigation.

The state has not refused this request so far and has said that there seems to be no restrictions to such an investigation in the law. They also pointed out that although it was not possible in the Maldives, it could be done abroad.

Judge Ali Adam has granted seven days for Faris’ lawyers to do the investigation and present the reports. If they failed to do so, he would make a decision based on the reports that have been presented to the court so far.

Apart from requesting for a forensic investigation, Faris had presented the court with 22 other documents.
