A boat sank in Alif Dhaal atoll early Thursday due to rough seas.

According to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the boat travelling to Omadhoo island in the same atoll, sank in the channel of Alihuras Kandu. The boat was found by a Transmaldivian Airways seaplane and all five people aboard have been rescued.

The Maldives is experiencing rough weather across the archipelago with the onset of the Southwest Monsoon (rainy season). A number of islands reported flooding due to heavy rains while Hithadhoo island in Addu atoll also experienced a tornado late Wednesday which damaged several houses and felled trees.
