According to a senior official of the five-star hotel run by Singapore’s SATS and Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) in airport island Hulhule, the employees suspended are the ones that refused to halt the protest despite repeated orders to stop their actions.
The official further added that allowances owed, accommodation and food are being provided by the hotel to the staff despite their suspension.
“After the issues, the hotel is now operating smoothly same as before. We always request staff to solve issues through proper communication. But some went against it and protested,” he said.
HIH had earlier proclaimed that they have provided most of the terms the staff demanded, including introduction of a scheme for employees to buy USD 5,000 at bank rates annually, travel allowance and deposition of salaries by the 29th of every month.
The local staff, numbering 80, went on strike on February 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., demanding that the management solve their issues. A hotel staff had said at the time that the protest and calls for resignation began over over unsolved complaints filed by the local employees, who declare that they are being discriminated against while the management favours expatriate employees.
Around 180 staff both local and expatriate are employed at the hotel.
