Former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb has been transferred to Maafushi Prison following the top court’s order to release all political prisoners, his lawyer Moosa Siraj revealed on Friday.
Adheeb was serving a 33-year jail sentence at the Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre. He was convicted for orchestrating a plot to assassinate President Abdullah Yameen and several other charges including graft and terrorism.
According to Siraj, Adheeb was transferred to Maafushi Prison in the early hours of Friday morning, but they were not informed why he was transferred.
The court late on Thursday night freed former President Mohamed Nasheed, Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim, Adhaalath Party’s leader Imran Abdullah, former defence minister Mohamed Nazim, MP Faris Maumoon, former Prosecutor General Muhthaz Muhusin, former magistrate of Maamigili court Ahmed Nihan and local businessman Hamid Ismail. It had also reinstated the 13 parliament members who were ousted from the parliament and nullified the ruling on floor crossing.
Despite the top court’s order to release the political prisoners, the government has not enforced any of the court’s ruling yet, and has since decided to confer its concerns regarding the ruling to Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed. No political prisoners have returned to the capital Male as of yet.
