Religiously conservative Adhaalath Party formed a special counselling committee for opposition party talks on the coming Presidential Elections.
The party announced on its official Twitter that the committee, formed late Sunday night, consists of nine members. The committee’s objective is to provide counsel on behalf of Adhaalath Party at the discussions of the joint opposition regarding the elections slated for September this year.
However, the party has decided to keep the committee members anonymous, stated Adhaalath’s spokesperson.
The opposition coalition earlier announced that opposition parties are in talks to nominate a single candidate to beat President Abdulla Yameen in the upcoming elections. With the announcement, former President Mohamed Nasheed had declared that he would run in Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s primary.
Despite his proclamation, his ongoing conviction to 13 years in jail over terrorism charges renders him ineligible to run.
Meanwhile, ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has dismissed the joint opposition’s claim of nominating a single candidate, stating that difference of interests and opinions between the opposition parties would lead to failure.
The opposition coalition has also come under fire over the delay in announcing their candidate. They responded that they would unveil their nominee “when it is time”, and that it was “not important to know whether [the candidate] is currently in jail, or in the Maldives or abroad”.
