Over 70 tonnes of waste was collected from the streets of Male on Saturday, the Ministry of Environment and Energy revealed after its “Maa Saafu Male” (very clean Male) cleaning initiative.

The programme commenced at 6 a.m. and some 4500 people, including employees of state institutions and private offices, school children and interested individuals had participated in the clean up.

Speaking to the press after the cleanup, environment ministry’s deputy minister Ali Ameer said that the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) will officially initiate Male cleanups on Sunday.

He added that Saturday’s clean up was initiated to help WAMCO before it began its new duty.

Ameer was also, however, sceptical about public perception, saying that some individuals already take advantage of the public services provided by the state and that they deliberately do things to disrupt government work.

The cleanup groups had collected the 70 tonnes of waste in about three hours. The initiative was extended to Villimale as well.
